Writers will hate me for this, but writing is subordinate to editing. It is the preeminent skill in storytelling. It is not the words themselves but the choice of the words; what to leave in and what to leave out. Personally, as a writer it is my consummate purpose to inflict every brilliant and golden thought or utterance in combating the innate ignorance of the preponderance of Humanity. Since, however, much of that is likewise bullshit, I am by necessity an editor first and foremost

Sunrise, a poem by WC Turck

Sunrise, a poem by WC Turck

I recall the sunrises,

When you rushed from bed, complaining how you needed coffee to see again

And panicked rush to find shoes; damn the socks!

From the kitchen window,

The colors built like a concerto, a harmony of lavender, gold and vermillion

The beach was still far away.

And the coffees promise faded,

The Bitterness and heat tempered with a hint of cream.

I recall the sunrises,

From the beach, my shoulder to yours; the singing gull and swarming surf.

The city was still asleep

Our heels pressed the velvet sand,

The wind frosted your cheeks in patches of carmine; I don’t recall you blinked.

You refused to surrender even a moment

By this light you are eternal,

As though hardly a day had passed since the moment we met.

Those memories are a continuum.

I recall the sunrises,

And the moments selfishly coveted; the first glimpse of day peeking at the horizon was ours alone.

I recall the sunrise.

That a billion arose before us.

A billion more will arise after; That revelation does nothing to diminish their commodity.

They are fragments of the days that accompany them,

They are the  archaeology of lives rushed through life all too quick.

They are the herbs of life’s menu.

I recall the sunrises…

Some things on Trump and Race…

Some things on Trump and Race…

Some things on Trump and Race came up today on Facebook with family. It had to do with the letters “KKK” followed by “Leave Niggers” spray-painted on the walls of Eastern Michigan University. A lot of reaction from friends and family. Here is part of that conversation. Names have been changed:

DAVE: Not sure how Trump fits into this. This kind of cowardice crap has been going on long before you, me or Trump was around.

SUE: Trump gives permission to his followers to not be “politically correct” so that they can spout all that racist garbage they had to keep a lid on before his candidacy — that’ s why his supporters love him. If he’s spouting racist, bigoted, misogynist rhetoric, then it must be okay.

CAROL: I agree with Tom and it was not correct before and it is not correct now…pretty sure Trump had nothing to do with those people’s idiocy….I would place blame on the parents and the biased main stream media race baiters…

ME: He has given them the confidence to move into the open. They openly applaud and support his rhetoric. he has shared and retweeted numerous posts from neo-Nazi and white supremacist hate sites, and David Duke, apart from openly endorsing him credits Trump with his congressional bid. Trump is an inspiration. their words not mine.

ME: Wow, race baiters? because there is no racism. All made up.

DAVE: The thing with Trump is he speaks mind and has no filter. Politicians, media and liberals have a problem with that. I think that the majority of people in this country are tired of the “business as usual” crap. The president has had more affect on racial tension in this country then Trump could ever have done. You wanted change? Well, you got it.

ME: Stop it, Dave. Stop being a dupe for media manipulation. If Trump is playing the media, don’t you think, billionaire, media savvy Trump is playing you and the rest of too? He doesn’t speak his mind, he speaks to a marketing plan that works.. As for Obama, who I dislike on policy levels vehemently, referring to racial issues is dividing the nation? Is calling attention to bank robbery dividing the nation along criminals and non criminals? You are buying a television and media manufactured personality. The racial conversation, painful as it is happens because America has denied it for so long. But put a Black man in office who speaks to issues important to him and that is divisive. Only if you are unprepared for a bit of self examination.. trust me, I am not buying any of Hillary’s shit either, but she will, in the interim, and for lack of any other choice not be anywhere near as destructive as Trump. Working class brother, Trump wouldn’t let you into one of his buildings, wouldn’t let you into one of his exclusive clubs and wouldn’t cross the street to piss on you if you hair was on fire., and as for speaking everything that’s on his mind, no filter…that’s also called Tourette’s.

As for the Debate Tomorrow…

As for the Debate Tomorrow…

As for the debate tomorrow, be honest, America. the audience for tomorrow’s first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is estimated to draw more the 100 million listeners and viewers. Is anyone tuning in because they are on the fence about Hillary or Trump? We are tuning in because we are all part of the reality TV show the election has become. We want to see if Hillary will cough or if Donald will wink at his white supremacists constituency. We are hoping it will turn into some inner city neighborhood screaming match laced with thoroughly entertaining epithets and insults just as crass as network television will allow. And if you are on the fence about whom to vote for, you have not been paying attention at all the last year or more. In that case, be a patriot and stay just as far away from a voting booth as astronomically possible!

Never Censorship.

Never Censorship!

I awoke this morning brimming with sarcasm, indignation and snarkiness. I planned to catch up on Skittles remarks, social justice and racial inequality.  Why is it that the world insists on intruding upon our comfortable American way of life. Take for example, the story of Jordanian writer and cartoonist, Nahed Hattar. He was executed by the Jordanian government after leaving a courthouse in Amman after being found guilty of insulting Islam over a cartoon that criticized jihadists, like ISIS. Well, the government didn’t officially execute him, but…

The Right will make noise that he was persecuted as a Christian, but nothing could be further from the truth. Hattar was persecuted for being a writer and a free thinker, something that apparently offends both the Right and jihadists.cartoon

Just as with the Charlie Hebdo attack, I will not flinch in defending free thought and free expression. I reproduced their cartoon, not to offend Muslims, but to defend thought that isn’t specifically meant to offend or provoke a specific group of people. Charlie Hebdo was not a group of anti-Islamic propagandists, but equal opportunity offenders. In other wards, they assailed idiocy, hypocrisy and injustice across the religious, cultural and political spectrum. There are no sacred cows here.

I should note that not even the Right, who jumped up and down on the hood of their anti-Islamic clown car and attacked CNN and the New York Times for not reprinting any Charlie Hebdo cartoons had the temerity to print one-Not one! I did. Once, not to offend, but to defend. o-veiled-570

It is for Nahed Hattar that I am reprinting his cartoon today, both to celebrate the life of a writer struck down by the forces of our collective ignorance and to defy anyone who believes that a bullet, a knife, a drone, a phalanx of Madison Avenue lawyers, a police truncheon or a genocide is enough to intimidate writers and free thinkers the world over from illuminating every corner of the human soul and experience. Nothing and no one is above criticism. Not a political leader, an anthem, a nation, a religion or its icon are exempt from contemplation, and when warranted, derision, satire and intellectual assault. When, where and how that occurs is purely the judgement of the artist and writer, and no one else.

Rest in peace, Hattar, if only in knowing we will carry on the fight.

Never Censorship. Never!
