The narrative is changing. For the better part of the weekend the rightwing media heralded a Trump speech, supposedly making an appeal to Blacks. Guess again. Instead it was a cynically racist attempt to  appeal to white voters with a “see we tried to appeal to Blacks, but they’re hopeless,” narrative.

The truth of it was that Donald Trump took  no effort to understand what the Black community cares about. When protesters appeared at the Detroit speech this week that provided the race-pornographers and shoot from the shadows white supremacists-those, that is, who love to quote crime statistics to demean Black communities or to delegitimize Black Lives Matter.

Trump espoused in his “Black” speech the need for school vouchers and school choice. Struggling parts of the Black community don’t need school choice, they need schools funded. Many communities no longer have adequate bussing and kids are required to take public transportation. A journey from the Southside of Chicago to a well-funded Northside school can take hours one way.

He assailed democratic rule for causing Detroit to collapse and for the violence in Chicago. The refrain on the Right is that democrats have “ruled cities for 50 years and where has it gotten Blacks? But dems have not ruled. And they have not ruled in a vacuum. The jobs that abandoned Detroit and Chicago and other urban areas, impacting the Black community the hardest was not the result of democrat policies, but of the corporate right and their “Market capitalism.” In the case of Detroit, like Freeport Illinois and a thousand other communities around the nation, was the sort of capitalism championed by the Right mostly and by the Left too often.

Jobs went overseas, decimating urban centers because Newt Gingrich, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and NAFTA, George Bush and Barack Obama and TPP. Jobs went overseas because our government is for sale to corporations and billionaires, like Donald Trump(Not that Hillary is a great deal better-but since I preferred Sanders, she is at least better than Trump).

Trump supports the same unrestricted, wild west second amendment perversion as the NRA. No laws. No oversight. No restriction. Chicago, they say, has the toughest gun laws in the nation and yet the violence continues unabated. It is no coincidence that gun stores ring the south and west side of the city, and that gun shows proliferate in Indiana, some only minutes away from Chicago city limits. The Chicago Police report that 78% of confiscated firearms in troubled Chicago neighborhoods are the result of straw purchases-that is legal buyers sell or give the guns to gang members.

And police? Yea, the Black community is calling for more police. Actually, if anyone bothered to listen they are calling for investment, inclusion and opportunity. We’ve had decades of the police and nothing has changed.

Trump’s speech wasn’t for the Black community, it was for the white community. Knowing full well that the Black community would scoff he opted for an end run to cleave the Black community away and consolidate white voters. All he had to do was show up. FOX, Joe Walsh, Dan Proft, Rush Limbaugh and others on the Right did the rest. Just as they do day in and day out, following a template exactly that Joseph Goebbels described:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
