The Last Man: An Excerpt

The Last Man: An Excerpt

A needle prick carries the well fever and epiphany of pain. Like me, it is a flaw in the perversion of modern genetics to manufacture and reconfigure humanity. Theirs is a revulsion of history and that which made men whole, despite their flaws. But history is betrayed in our bodies. It fled there long ago from the arrogance of purposeful evolution.

Oh, the world that resides within that first wonderfully awakening instant of pain! At once curious and electric, but so terribly fleeting as it trails away from its cold eruption into something warm and remorseful, like the first breath of a beautiful word fading towards its demise. The pain clears my mind and diverts unguarded thoughts before they can betray me. This is how I have stymied them for so long!

A ruby-red drop grows at the tip of my finger. It reflects the acrid gloom of the city. I study the blood for a moment, as though it is some ancient relic of myself, of what I am and what I am not- which seems to threaten the very existence of society, according to the Corporation. Even the reddish smear it leaves across the wall is an element of the battle. For now it is fresh among dozens of others.

Section twenty-one regulates and controls the society. I should say here that they are not cruel or calculating by any standard, which is not to say that I fear what is written here will be read by Section Twenty-one. Society regulates itself well enough through the consequence of blind momentum and the dumb weight of population. Section Twenty-one shepherds that momentum through the implication, through a culture of subverted fear as real as an extra helping of salt brings a certain bitterness to a stew.

That they are not overt in cultivating fear they view as benevolence and judiciousness is also purposeful. Section Twenty-one allows me the paper and pen to organize my defense. It is curious how they bend over backwards to create the illusion of fairness, as if the ultimate outcome was ever really in question. Instead my hand strains to write these words, a melancholic refrain to ancestors distant and long dead. That refrain is as much a part of my defense as I am. It is their defense as well, for it is their memory that has been erased from the world. That is until I came along.

And what do I expect from these selfish thoughts? Perhaps they will be a cornerstone to a revolution that reasserts the autonomous stature of each soul. I might hope that the spirit in every human being, all but extinguished by the Corporation, will re-ignite and run like wildfire around the planet and beyond. And if cities are razed and millions lost for the retrieval of our plundered liberties then so be it. What could prove a nobler cause?

Ha! It is a laughable thought. What absurdity to believe that the pallid assertions of pallid assertions of words swept into the dustbin of history, when my eyes no longer see and when my hands no longer write, and when the years have ground me to dust, that these words will do them any justice. But still I continue, playing the game, lifting my head each morning, while fantasizing about nothing short of revolution. It is as if there was some intransigent quality to the breath in my lungs, or the blood in my veins that compels me despite a tattered heart.

There is a world outside my window. It is a dull urban landscape: monstrous conglomerations of metal and glass and concrete. The city appears more as some odd crystalline growth, inhabited by mindless crustaceans or single celled organisms than by people. It is too much for the land, almost too much for the clouds drifting among them through jaundiced industrial haze. On twisted and overlapping expressways, far below, traffic lights appear as sluggish rivers of molten lava.

The sun lays low on the far horizon, hardly more than a pale disk through dust and sulfur smog. I pause from these words for a moment to ponder the darkening city, I wonder about the people who go more quietly about their lives than I do. I would prefer to change places if only I did not hope that I serve a greater purpose or that I wasn’t locked in a battle for my very survival.

Would I relish their ignorance, or feel the fool in some errant awakening? In the umber shadow of sleep the faces of my ancestors visit me, and I know that I must see this through to the end.

Millions rush blind in their tasks, sending up choruses of breathless greetings and simple offenses forgotten almost before they are spoken. They are feverish, feverish in their work, feverish in their play and even in their sex. This is a new world, wholly different from the one mankind understood before. There is no war. Birth and life and death are mandated by the Corporation, administered by Section Twenty-one and monitored by Sentinel. Gone are distinctions of race. The blend is complete. Homogeneity is the new order. The dream of the futurists too afraid or hypocritical to ponder the ramifications has at last been achieved.

It heralded a new golden age, the extinction of animosities, inequality and war. There is no want and no poverty to speak of, none that is acknowledged anyway. Mankind is identical in every way and at every point on the planet. They are identical in the color of their hair and eyes. And their bodies are uniform, at least as uniform as the schemes and science of modern genetics will allow. None of them ever envisioned me.

And I among these uniform hordes, by quirk or by fate, or by the mindless consequence of the Universe stand alone. I am a scar from an erased past, an anachronism, an aberration in a world in which the question of race is obsolete. I am a threat to man’s formulated illusions of himself. I am the unintentional heretic, an intrusion upon the unprepared modern conscience. Black as I am, I am a ghost. I am a tribe alone.

On the Environment Front. Oklahoma suffered a strong earthquake likely caused by Fracking. A recent SMU study, however, found no link between Fracking and thousands of quakes which only began after large scale Fracking began. Instead, the study said, the quakes were likely caused by waste water wells from Fracking. In other words, it isn’t the knife wound in your chest that is the problem, it is all the blood spurting from the hole!

Is Your Food Safe?

Is Your Food Safe?

A note: The below food alert is not an effort to embargo food from foreign countries, but an effort to drive quality and safety, although, when and where possible locally sourced foods should remain the best choice…

*Smithfield Farms, the largest pork producing farm in the USA was sold in
September to China with the unanimous support of its stockholders!!  The
hogs will be raised here, but slaughtered and packaged for sale there
before being sent back here.  This includes labels of*

ï·      *Morrell*

ï·      *Eckrich*

ï·      *Krakus*

ï·      *Cudahy*

ï·      *Premium Hams*

ï·      *Cook’s*

ï·      *Gwaltney*

*The same with many chickens.  They can now be shipped there, but when they
come back all that needs to be labeled is that they  were “RAISED IN THE
USA.”** Not that they were processed in China !!! *

*Our great FDA at work again.  The chickens will be all processed and most
sold to fast food restaurants for sandwiches, as well as to schools and
supermarkets.  The China slaughter and processing are not nearly equal to
the requirements here.*

*We recently learned thatStarkist Tuna is now owned by Korea, and is in big
conflict with the U.S.concerning quality, safety, and records, which Korea
refuses to produce.*

*Read several articles on Google about avoiding the fish that comes from

*Returned home from buying  Albertson’s 4-day special of 4 bags of frozen
tilapia for the price of one.** Sure enough, on the top of the bags, it
read “farm raised”, and on the bottom in small print it said, “China”.*

*Recently a Food inspector on TV said he had lived overseas and had seen
the filthy conditions their foods are raised and processed in. It is enough
to make you gag.  Some foreign workers have to wear masks as they work in
these places, because the food is so rotten and filthy, it makes them want
to throw up.  Many of their fish on Fish Farms are fed raw sewage daily.
He said he has seen so much filth throughout their food growing and
processing that he would “never” eat any of it.  They raise this filth, put
some food coloring and some flavorings on it, then they ship it to the USA
& Canada for YOU to consume and feed to YOUR families. They have no Food &
Safety Inspectors. *

*Imported food we eat and the junk we buy:*

ï·      *Green Giant frozen vegetables are from China,*

ï·      *and so are most of Europe’s Best.*

ï·      *Arctic Gardens are OK*

*so is*

ï·      *Birdseye.*

**Never buy the grocery store garlic unless it is clearly marked from USA
or Canada*; the other stuff is grown in people poop (even worse than
chicken poop). China is the largest producer of garlic in the world; U.S.
is next.*

**Buy only local honey*. Much honey is shipped in huge containers from
China and re-packed here.*

*If the country of origin is not clearly marked, beware!*

*Watch out for packages which state “prepared for”, “packed by” or
“imported by”.*

*We don’t understand the lack of mandatory labeling, especially the

*The country of origin should be clearly shown on the item in the store.*

*Go to the local farmers’ markets in season and keep a wary eye open the
rest of the year.*

*How is it possible to ship food from China cheaper than having it produced
in the*

*U. S. or Canada?*

*Beware, Costco sells canned peaches and pears in a plastic jar that come
from China ..*

**Recently The Montreal Gazette had an article* by the Canadian Government
on how Chinese feed the fish: They suspend chicken wire crates over the
fish ponds, and the fish feed on chicken s..t.*

*If you search the internet about what the Chinese feed their fish, you’ll
be alarmed;  eg: growth hormones, expired anti-biotics from humans?  Never
buy any type of fish or shellfish that comes from these countries*

ï·      *Vietnam*

ï·      *China*

ï·      *Philippines*

*Steinfeld’s Pickles are made in India – just as bad!*

*Another example is in canned mushrooms.  No-Name brand came from

*Also check those little fruit cups.  They used to be made in Canada in the
Niagara region until about 2 years ago. They are now packaged in China.
Most sold in Aldi stores.*

*While the Chinese export inferior and even toxic products, dangerous toys,
and goods to be sold in North American markets, the media wrings its hands!*

*Yet, 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded
to the Chinese should be suspended.*

*Well, duh ! Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges?*

*Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says ‘Made
in China’ or ‘PRC’ (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose
another product, or none at all.  You will be amazed at how dependent you
are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do

*If 200 million North Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese
goods, that’s a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor …
fast!  The downside?  Some Canadian/American businesses will feel a
temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory.*

*Just one month of trading losses will hit the Chinese for 8% of their
North American exports.  Then they will at least have to ask themselves if
the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness are worth it.*

*Send this to everybody you know.  Let’s show them that we are intelligent,
and NOBODY can take us for granted *Start reading labels more closely and
buy something else even if it cost a few cents more*.*

Oh, the Spin on a Hurricane…By the Numbers.

Oh, the Spin on a Hurricane…By the Numbers.

Oh, the spin on a hurricane. When it comes to global warming deniers, they spin faster than a Cat 5 cyclone. Joe Walsh, deposed Illinois Republican congressman turned radio propagandist told his audience, as did Limbaugh this week, that a hurricane has not hit the continental US in “over 4000 days.” That will come as a shock to victims of Hurricane Sandy slightly more than 1460 days ago-back in 2012. That flawed, okay, lying statistic is used to prove that rather than an increase in storms as predicted by climate change, that there is no warming. In fact, the intensity of storms has increased as evidenced by a series of super-cyclones in the pacific in  just the last 3 years. Limbaugh, Walsh and others conveniently isolate the “Continental United States,” ignoring that the contiguous US accounts for just 7% of the total LAND area of the planet. Since the planet is roughly 70% water, the US land mass presents a rather insignificant target. Dozens of powerful storms have lashed the Caribbean, Mexico, central and South America, and many more cyclones have pounded the Pacific rim. but then the US. They also fail to  point out that El Nino and abnormally high ocean temperatures affected the formation of storms over the past year to 18 months. Further, a greater amount of moisture in the atmosphere due to warming may have affected the incidence of African atmospheric dust in the Atlantic, which plays a part in storm and hurricane formation. Recall, in an earlier post we pointed out that the environment is not cyclical, but that evolves in patterns, sort of like stairs are similar in shape, but each is higher or lower than the next, and therefore not identical. Finally, oil and anti-warming industry crowd, like Michael Savage and the others this week pointed to the “miniscule” 3 millimeter, or 0.13 inch annual rise in the ocean surface-something, by the way, they were denying completely 2 years ago(See the deniers are evolving too!) over the past 20 years. The number is fairly accurate, but they are counting that you will not comprehend the size and scale of the planet’s oceans,  and the amount of glacial melting it would take to cause such a rise globally. They also rely that you won’t add 0.13 times 20, for a total sea level rise of 2.6 inches, exactly what scientists predicted. The scary part is, they are right. Too many of us won’t do the math…That’s okay, maybe Donald Trump will build a wall.

Putting a Cork in Climate Deniers. Delicious!

Putting a Cork in Climate Deniers. Delicious!

Okay, so what does Global Warming and a barrel of Grape Juice have in common? First, how many times have you heard the two prevailing arguments against man-made climate change? Truthfully, even the scientists don’t make it easy to find concise answers. So when a friend who listens a bit too often to Rush Limbaugh or FOX News says something like, the environment is cyclical, responding with a sharp fact-based retort can be daunting.

There were ice ages and then warm ups, they say, parroting oil company propagandists such as those from the Heritage Foundation, and those cycles have happened a number of times throughout Earth’s history, long before there were SUVs. The other popular refrain is that we tiny little humans are just too insignificant to affect something as large as Earth’s incredibly large environment.

First, apparently they never looked closely at the terribly thin and fragile veil of protective atmosphere as seen from space. As for climate cycles. Sorry, there are no “cycles.” Cycles implies identical or near identical repetitions. That has never existed in earth’s climate. In fact, there are no cycles. There have been numerous Ice Ages, but all due to different causes; a shift in axis, a decline in solar output, massive geologic activity, differences in the make up of the atmosphere (i.e., higher levels of oxygen), changes in ocean currents, asteroid impacts.

Likewise, warm ups in between are due to a number of variables as well; changes in ocean currents, soot or ash absorbing sunlight helping to melt glaciers, greater CO2 levels in the atmosphere, ocean currents, etc. Bottom line, the environment is always changing, that much is true, but it isn’t cyclical. Careful not to get drawn into the changing seasons cycle. We are talking about long term global scale events. They are just trying to bury you in minutia because they have no argument at this point. Why? Because Limbaugh doesn’t get that detailed. Details hurt his fake argument.

Finally, we are just too small to affect the atmosphere. Hmm, you mean like global thermal nuclear war and nuclear winter? Or a thousand square miles of the uninhabitable Chernobyl Exclusion Zone? Or the entire Gulf of Mexico after an explosion and spill in just one well? That kind of we’re too small?

I was aware of the climate and environment issues back in 1978 thanks to my sophomore chemistry teacher, an ex-hippie named Mrs. Russo. That was the first of 5 years of Chemistry education, culminating in a college level chemistry class and an organic chemistry class. It was Mrs. Russo who got me hook on that branch of science. Back then the environmental issue was pollution. Mrs. Russo had a brilliant way of illustrating that issue. She taught us how to make wine!

The similarity to wine and the Earth’s environment is startling. Both can be considered  a pristine, Eden-like environment for their respective inhabitants. The key to making wine is simply, to introduce tiny, microscopic bacteria to that comparatively monumentally huge sweet, sugary environment. Preposterous! says the Limbaugh bacterium. There is no way a few micro-organisms can affect a huge vat of grape juice. Why, we’ll just go on reproducing and doing as we please. After all, the great yeast god gave us dominion over all the juice in the vat!

The bacterial population explodes. There is an abundance of food, spurring exponential reproduction. But a consequence of the reproduction and the consumption of  sugar are two waste products; CO2 and alcohol. Essentially a great exhale and everybody peeing in the pool at the same time. In my sophomore at home experiments, performed many, many times, I placed a balloon over the top of the bottle. When the balloon no longer filled up, the bacteria were dead. Time for a cocktail, after filtering out the near complete extinction of the bacteria, that is.

Had the bacteria had the good sense for temperance and not listened to the Amoebic little Rush Limbaugh they might have reached a point of equilibrium, at least until they could build a tiny little rocket ship and fly away. But the lesson here is that, like that tiny bacteria, relatively small organisms can definitely impact their environment. Just ask John Steinbeck.

TPP Action Alert: Sun, Aug 38th, 3-7p
Stop the TPP,
Sun, Aug 38th, 3-7p,
UE Hall on Ashland, 37 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, 60607
It is official, Obama is sending the TPP to Congress earlier than we thought – it may come up for a vote as early as Sept 9th. And the danger zone will continue through the Fall into the lame duck session, its-official-obama-to-send- congress-tpp/

We are planning a Post “Bernie – Our Revolution” meeting for further organizing to
Stop the TPP,
Sun, Aug 38th, 3-7p,
UE Hall on Ashland, 37 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, 60607

We would like to organize NO TPP Action Teams to bird dog the Pro – TPP and “vulnerable to flipping” IL Reps and Sens. (Kirk most definitely, and possibly Durbin as well).

Please grab your friends, family and neighbors and RSVP at: events/1669495316703615/

We welcome all of the No -TPP fighters from across Chicagoland to attend. All of us together will help identify our targets, break into teams, develop messages and action plans for Sept/Oct to put pressure on these specific legislators – actions could be planned for Labor Day parades, the legislative offices, and campaign stops, and more.

We will also discuss what plans may be brewing for actions in Nov and National actions as well.

Mara Cohen from People Demanding Action will be there to discuss how her Resource Hub can help each of the teams. And we will plan conf. calls going forward to share success stories, encourage each other in our actions, and share news as it comes out about IL legislators.

Please come share the plans for action in your communities. If you are already pressuring one or more of the Il Reps or Sens then you or your group can continue to be leaders in your area.

We are in the home stretch of an epic struggle to maintain our sovereignty, for the environment, and against One World Corporate Control – please do not miss the final battles against the TPP.

Thanks for all you have done already against the TPP, and all that you are about to do going forward, please share this email with your contacts – thanks.
